The Rhythm of Basins

In this period, Israel’s growth rate is the highest among developed countries, and the growth of the cities in Israel is affected by this parameter. Open spaces are turning into sealed surfaces which cannot absorb waterfall in an overwhelming short amount of time. Moreover, along with extreme climate changes, we encounter a serious issue where severe amounts of precipitation are added in a short amount of time into the drainage systems and the rivers.

 

Today, the planning system of Israel is not taking into account the fractal complexities of basins, but rather looking at the drainage and rivers as a linear system to get rid and\or sustain water-runoff. This project suggests developing an algorithmic system that takes into account many complex parameters, such as river flow, precipitation radar data, isochronic graphs, capacity of water to hold in open spaces and more. With that kind of data, the algorithm can calculate a water-balance, which in extreme rainfalls, flooding in cities will be reduced to zero all around the main basin, and the basins inside this basin in a fractalic way. With that kind of algorithm comes new opportunity to make a new kind of urbanism which uses intelligently the water it gets for itself and the people in it. The project examines how various spaces can be mixed-uses in the urban day to day functions and in a scaled extreme precipitations period. Thanks to that, those spaces provide a unique and experiential attraction of water shows which takes shape and form based on the data given to the algorithm.
