What does it mean to experience electricity consumption? When does it become waste? Can design bridge people’s values and their everyday practices?
These questions motivated this doctoral research, which explores domestic electricity consumption as an experience rather than solely a technical, economic, or environmental phenomenon. Combining qualitative inquiry, conceptual framework development, and Research through Design, the study investigates the experiential aspects of domestic electricity consumption and how to improve it. An application prototype titled Zero Electricity Waste at Home, centered on people’s perceptions of electricity waste, was developed to explore and evaluate this experience. The findings suggest that design can align values with consumption practices, opening new opportunities for enhancing personal experiences while supporting broader goals. The seminar will present the research process, key findings, theoretical contributions, and implications.
