Can a society founded on an ideology of equality escape social class? And what happens to mechanisms of stratification when a community has already separated itself from the surrounding society?

This study examines class formation within socially bounded communities through the case of Israeli kibbutz society and Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social class. Using a quantitative approach, economic, social, and cultural forms of capital are translated into an empirical model that maps and quantifies internal class structures and patterns of spatial differentiation.

The findings reveal distinct mechanisms of stratification even within a society founded on egalitarian ideals, though not necessarily through the resources one might expect. The study offers a new perspective on the relationship between class, community, and space, and on how inequality is reorganized within societies perceived as socially homogeneous.
