Urban residential yards provide important environmental, social, and health benefits. In Tel Aviv-Yafo, they comprise roughly a quarter of the city’s open area, hosting diverse natural elements. As private domains, their condition depends heavily on residents’ choices, which are shaped by cultural, social, and municipal factors. Despite their significance, few studies explore these natural elements from a cultural perspective.
This study investigates the roles of nature in Tel Aviv’s shared yards through three analytical lenses: the historic 1925 Geddes Plan, current municipal actions, and residents’ perspectives. The findings highlight diverse values and reveal key management challenges attributed to natural elements, ultimately proposing frameworks to utilize them as essential resources for urban resilience and community well-being.
