Arch. Karen Lee Bar-Sinai : Territorial-Based Robotic Fabrication

Since the dawn of civilization, architecture and site were linked as early societies adapted their environments using found materials and developed custom tools towards construction. However, the tradition of sourcing local materials has dramatically diminished with industrialization and the ease of transporting materials to construction sites. This process has resulted in massive extraction and a significant alteration of the Earth’s surface. As the prevalence of robotic fabrication in architecture increases, transforming native matter into architectural grounds and structures on-site becomes possible. The thesis titles this possibility territorial-based robotic fabrication and develops the conceptual and methodological foundations for performing it. Through explorative case studies, it contributes a contextual digital fabrication approach, anchoring digital fabrication in the environment that it is situated in and linking found matter to the architecture it nurtures.
