Graduation Project 2023

Kibbutz expansion and preservation of its identity.

The cooperative settlement form known as the ‘kibbutz’ is unique globally, rooted in the values of solidarity, sustainability, and a connection to nature. However, the rise of neoliberal approaches has fundamentally altered the kibbutz lifestyle, leading to the emergence of the ‘renewed’ (semi-cooperative) kibbutz—a society grappling with existential and identity challenges. In response to urbanization and overcrowding, many established kibbutz expansions have taken on a suburban typology, which has eroded the distinct character of kibbutz life.

This project focuses on a ‘renewed’ coastal kibbutz, Nachsholim, located on a popular beach. It proposes methods to gradually double the kibbutz’s population while preserving the sense of community and the surrounding natural environment. The suggested construction typologies aim to create spaces that facilitate both interpersonal and ‘inter-natural’ encounters. Additionally, connected living units and peripheral parking will help naturally prevent gentrification.

Furthermore, the project aims to integrate the coastal landscape into the kibbutz, blending it with the typical grass lawns and pastoral gardens. Expanding the coastal buffer will also enhance public access to the beach, creating a more equitable balance between the space shared by kibbutz members and visitors.

I believe that increasing the population and economic opportunities will foster a sustainable living environment that minimizes commuting. By preserving the essence of the kibbutz concept while adapting it to contemporary needs, the initiative will encourage greater involvement, connectivity, and collective responsibility among residents for their living spaces.
