Shany Barath is the founder and director of Disrupt.Design Lab at the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning, and a principal investigator at both the National Building Research Institute and the Resnick Sustainability Center for Catalysis. She is the recipient of the Climate Solutions Prize for Breakthrough Research and the Goldberg Research Prize Fund, recognized for her pioneering work on photosynthetic living building materials. Her interdisciplinary research redefines conventional architectural practice through the integration of emerging biotechnologies and robotic manufacturing, addressing the massive global CO₂ emissions, global waste, and raw material consumption directly attributed to the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sectors.
She holds degrees from the Technion, TU Delft (Netherlands), and the Architectural Association Design Research Laboratory (AADRL) (UK). Before joining the Technion, she served as Studio Master and Program Head at the Architectural Association (AA) in London, worked in internationally renowned practices including UNStudio and West 8, and co-founded ShaGa Architects, where interdisciplinary, environmentally driven technological strategies were applied to real-world design challenges. Her work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Beijing Biennale, Milan Design Week, and the Triennale Milano 24th International Exhibition. She has received prestigious design awards, including the Design Educates Award Gold Prize, with Disrupt.Design Lab technologies recognized by the Fiori Salone Sustainability Mention and the EU Engage4BIO Award, and described as “paving the way to the future we want.”
