Coral reefs are undergoing accelerated degradation, with projections indicating that up to 90% may face extinction by 2050. In light of this, there is an urgent need for active restoration approaches, including the creation of artificial reefs capable of supporting marine biodiversity.
This research examined form, color, and material as key design parameters in 3D-printed ceramic reefs. The experiments explored morphological variations and modular assemblies designed to provide structural stability while addressing broad ecological needs. A field experiment conducted in the Red Sea documented the influence of color on fish behavior and attraction patterns, demonstrating how material, form, and color jointly operate as active design parameters. These findings propose an integrative approach to the design of sustainable artificial reefs.
