Israel’s Mediterranean Kurkar cliffs are dynamic coastal systems undergoing continuous processes of erosion and collapse. Current responses rely mainly on local engineering interventions, which do not always address the wider coastal system or the natural processes shaping it.
This research examines the potential of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for addressing coastal cliff erosion in Israel. Through an analysis of cliff characteristics, case studies, and a review of approaches from Israel and abroad, the research also examines existing Israeli policy and planning frameworks and how they influence the selection of erosion-management strategies. Based on these findings, the research develops a site-specific planning framework that seeks to integrate natural processes, local conditions, and the existing planning system.
