Urban atmosphere constitutes the sensory and emotional quality of the environment, directly influencing individual experience; yet these qualities challenge conventional verbal representation. This research proposes a new theoretical conceptualization of atmosphere based on spatio-temporal unity, developing theoretical and methodological tools to uncover these qualities in public space. An arts-based phenomenographic ethnography methodology was developed, integrating drawing in artists’ journals as a mediating tool between subject and space. The three-tiered framework included calibrating an autoethnographic journal in Tel Aviv, analyzing present-moment experience embedded in memory and material, and an intersubjective expansion with four artists in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Haifa. The study conceptualizes urban atmosphere as a “spatio-temporal affective field”, offering a new framework for exploring subject-environment dynamics.
