Elastic recovery is the ability of a stretched material to return to its original size, a quality crucial for stretchy clothing. Yarns made from elastane, a flexible synthetic copolymer, are commonly embedded into fabrics and knitted into bands to improve garment flexibility and prevent deformation. While elastane improves elastic recovery, it significantly limits the possibility of recycling or composting these garments, creating major issues in post consumer textile waste management. This research proposes a sustainable alternative to the usage of elastane in textiles by 3D printing flexible compostable biopolymers and heat bonding them to knitted cotton textiles. Multiple printed structures are tested for their ability to improve elastic recovery while allowing complete degradation of the material in industrial composting facilities.
