Beni Barzellai: Arid Tropicalism – Between Brazil and Israel. The desert projects of Zvi Dekel and the influence of Roberto Burle Marx

The research examines the development of landscape architecture in Israel from 1960 onwards, focusing on local modernism, and the way in which it is reflected in the work of landscape architect Zvi Dekel (b. 1928). Dekel studied and worked in Brazil with Roberto Burle Marx (1909-1994) who influenced him with the ideas of the Brazilian national renewal movement, which praised not only the local culture and history, but also its geographical values. Upon his return to Israel, Dekel molded the principles he found in Brazil into a unique design language for the arid Israeli desert. The study traces the complex relationship between the design of the local landscape and the design of the local identity and culture, and the creation of a new term regarding Dekel’s work, arid tropicalism.
