Abstract. Mass manufacturing and personal fabrication are conventionally treated as opposites — scale versus customization, the factory versus the maker. This talk argues that the distinction is dissolving, and that the collision relocates design's central problem from drawn form to the grammar of the fabrication process itself. Drawing on work spanning 3D-printed coral reefs and adaptive ceramic extrusion, I show how locating the design act inside the machine — choreographing its process rather than fixing a form — yields variety without tooling, and with it a more sustainable model of production. I close with a research agenda for designing at this convergence.
