The digital laboratory includes a service laboratory that offers 3D printing, scanning, cutting and milling services to faculty and student in the Technion, And a research Laboratory (TCODE - Technion's Computer Oriented DEsign). For information on the research laboratory (TCODE)

Laser cutters

 

 

The laboratory equipped with two laser cutting machines with cutting intensity of 100 watt.
The machines are able to cut  and engrave a variety of materials according to DXF file format lines or according to an image file.
The machine's cutting area is 580X 880 Millimeters

For health reasons one may cut materials only from a limited list (see list below). You can purchase in the laboratory special materials cutting boards that are approved for use, such as cottonwood and Plexiglas in different thicknesses.

Laser Safety:

The machine will be operated by trained responsible student. An untrained student is not allowed to run the machine.
According to Technion's safety instructions for lasers, while cutting, only the authorized operator and the client are allowed in the room.
Everyone in the room will use standard laser protective glasses.
Please review the safety instructions before using the laser cutting machines.

 

 

3D printing

The laboratory equipped with two 3D printers, one is manufactured by OBJET and the second by ZCORP.
Printers differ in resolution, materials, printing technology and therefore costs.
Printers receive STL file.

 

 

Alaris 30 Objet

 

 

The printer prints a white polymer material. Printer's tray size is 30 cm long, 20 cm wide and 15 cm high. Printing accuracy is about 0.1 to 0.2 mm.

The time needed to print 3D model can vary significantly depending on the size of the model and its formal complexity. It can change vary from few hours for a simple model of a few grams and up to a whole day for a complex model consists of hundreds of grams. Print price-list appears at the appointments site

 

 

ZPrinter 350 (ZCORP)

 

 

The printer prints plaster-like material.
Tray size is 25.4 cm long, 20.3 cm wide and 20.3 cm high. Resolution is 300X450 dpi.

CNC

 

 

This machine manufactured by EXITECH. The machine's work surface is 240 cm long, 130 cm wide and its Bridge height is 50 cm. The machine equipped with 8 tools automatic changer. The machine designed to cut and process wood and polymer materials (soft materials).
The machine is s activated by ALPHCAM software, which accepts files in most known formats. For complete list of formats, see the link below.

3D scanning

 

 

The laboratory is equipped with an ARTEC EVA scanner.  This is a 3D scanner, scanning items up to the size of a small car. Accuracy of the scan varies, depending on a variety of factors, but can reach up to 0.1 mm.

Scanning will be in accordance with the procedure detailed here.
The scan will be performed by a trained student.  After scanning, the model will be uploaded to a folder on the server. The scanner software will be installed on all computers.
The software allows repairing mesh from the scan and from external models (for the purpose of three-dimensional printing or milling).

Guidance in design and manufacturing involving complex geometry

 

The laboratory offers a platform for knowledge-sharing, together with software that enable the following capabilities:

1. Building complex three dimensional works, rationalization of 3D works (works from 3D planning or scanning).

2. Preparation of 3D printing files and milling various materials (soft materials, wood and aluminum).

3. Correcting errors in 3D files (STL files) and transforming mesh files into NURBS files.

4. Comparison between files / models (points cloud, mesh, NURBS).

5. Guidance in computer-based manufacturing on any scale.

We provide consulting services on these issues for researchers and students at the Technion, as well as to external parties.
