Rivka Oxman holds the B.Sc., M.Sc., and D.Sc. degrees from the Technion Israel Institute of
Technology where she is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Architecture and Town
Planning. Among recent academic appointments, she has been Vice Dean for Teaching. She
was a Visiting Professor at Stanford University, USA, Delft University of Technology, the
Netherlands; and held research appointments at MIT, USA, Berkeley, USA, and at the
Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.

Her prior research was in the field of AI in Design where she has explored experimental
methods and formalized various design paradigms that were founded on concepts and
methods in Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence (Rule-based Design, Expert
Systems, Frame-based Representations and Case-based Reasoning) as a basis for the
development of design systems.

Currently she is conducting research on theories of digital design and exploring the
contribution of digital technologies to novel paradigms in design and architecture. Among
recent specific research topics, she is investigating the impact of material-based fabrication
technologies on novel models of design tectonics.

Her recent co-authored book “The New Structuralism: Design, Engineering and Architectural
Technologies” is a special issue of AD: Architctural Design published by John Wiley, 2010. A
